Women’s Microenterprise Goat Program

As the economy of Haiti continues to deteriorate, women are facing demanding challenges. In Haiti, women are considered the cornerstone of the family. In fact, they support a large majority of Haiti’s economic activities in the non-formal sector which makes up 75% of Haiti’s economy

The objectives of this project include :

  1. 1.Set up an 18 month capacity building training program for the women’s group in order for them to be capable to run a micro-enterprise business. In order to have greater success in doing this, QIFD will also design and implement an adult literacy program.
  2. To desing a business plan for the goat enterprise.
  3. To conduct a feasibility study to determine all of the possible markets where they can sell the goats:
    • Selling them alive at local animal markets
    • Slaughtering the goats and selling the meat to individuals, local restaurants, hotels and markets (Cayes)
    • Look at the market for other possible transformations – goat cheese, milk, etc.
  4. To help the women design a marketing plan based on the information we obtain from the feasibility study to sell the goats.
  5. To create and train a committee within the women’s group that will spearhead the development of community projects that they will implement with the money raised from the goat business. These community projects should benefit the community at large ; such as the construction of a community school or the building of a potable water system for the town.

We feel that it is vitally important to work with women to not only reinforce their capacities, but to provide economic opportunities to aid not only in their individual development, but the overall development of their communitties.

In light of this, QIFD has designed a micro enterprise goat project with a women’s organization, Gwoup Fanm Franchiz (GFF) in Beraud, located in the south of Haiti. This program is designed to provide technical capacity building for women to teach them how to run a business to provide income for the women in the organization and to launch other community driven projects; such as building a school.

Goals

This program aims to :

  1. Provide training to GFF to augment their capacities for them to successfully run a micro-enterprise business. This will include an adult literacy program.
  2. To establish a core business team within GFF and provide trainings to them in how to run the goat enterprse.

Beneficiaries

This program will ultimately benefit the entire community of Beraud, not just the women of GFF, as the money raised from the goat will be used for projects geared to the community at large.
